How perfectionism can kill growth?

November 1st, 2009

perfecitonism
For successful personal development, the most important is to experience big personal change.

You decide what you want, what is best for you and inspire you most, focus all attention to it, and go fast and decisively in the implementation of large and small positive changes.

Concentrate for the moment in this second part, when you make a strong and decisive move in the way of positive change.

What can slow you? Fear of failure can, right? You may be also blocked by regret, hate and anger.

Another thing that can block you in the path of development, which in this article I wish to pay attention is wish to be perfect. Perfectionism. Yes, perfectionism can very very much slow down your personal development.

Moreover, perfectionism can completely stop your progress. How? Well … Let’s start from the beginning.

I see often that people are trying to be perfect. All they want something in return. What do they want?

1. Success in their intentions. The main thinking here is that only and only if you’re perfect, you can get good result at something. If not, you do not have a chance. If you are not perfect, you will not succeed in your intentions. If you always think you can be perfect, you will live better.

2. Get a better opinions of others. Striving for perfection, they want to improve other people’s opinions about themselves, feel important and proud when talking to others that they strive for perfection. So they want to raise other people’s opinions about themselves so they will go around and talk about how how they are perfect or perfectionist. Or they are afraid of what others say about them if they are not perfect.

Many people think that if they want to achieve this, they must be perfect.

But is this really true?

Let us think a little about the perfection …

What is the standard of perfectionism? Everything must be perfect. This is when someone in everything must apsolutly be perfect. The smallest part of one large project or step of your game or move in a sport, must to be absolutely perfect, otherwise it is considered failure. And then you feel bad. That would be a perfectionist standard. Everything must be perfect. Just aim for perfect, everyone will love and you will be successful. Repeat this and you will become God. :D

The only problem is that human beings can not be perfect. :) Not because they are stupid. Not because they are not intelligent enough. On the contrary, people have a lot of potential. But  because nature is not made us perfect. Nature does not care whether you want to be perfect. You are a man you wanted to or not, and can not become perfect.

It is not about “doing everything perfect”, it is about “to do”. There are of course cases when to you want to give your best, when you want that. But there is no need to constantly strive for perfection always.

Yes, it is easy to think of how you will be (in the future) perfect, but it is not possible at the present moment, now.

So, try to play the game of life and be perfect, a few months. What do you think will you be able to do things perfect? Of course not. So why then constantly strive perfect, why not accept your imperfection?

Do you think that the tendency of trying to be perfect work?

How many times, when you start something completely new, you’ve actually succeed, as you imagined? Imagine the first time you play a sport that you never before seen. Will you be successful as professionals in the sport or you make mistakes? It would be mistakes, right?

BIG  personal changes

sumica

Now go back to the first sentence in this article … for a successful personal improvement, the most important is to experience big personal change.”Big personal change” means to open for a completely new experience. To go in a completely unfamiliar situation. So be spontaneous, to try something new, because you can enjoy it. With such experience you can learn new things, strengthen you, and they are the basis of your progress and grow as a human being. So, my advice is – believe in yourself and get in situations where there are no guarantees. And I want to ask you something, whether it is possible at the same time expect perfectionism and experience big personal change? No, it’s completely opposite things. Perfectionist does not allow himself anything but perfect. Every detail must be perfect. If it is not perfect, then the perfectionist feels bad. If you a perfectionist know that when he try something new he will experience errors, then he know that he will feel bad. And normally, every man avoid to feel bad, and thus avoid new, interesting experience, especially big personal changes.

Therefore, the perfectionist will continue to do things that he know best, because it is minimal chanse for failure and error. So, he will not experience changes. And if you do not experience the changes, you will not grow.

This isn’t an attack on anyone. If you think that you can be perfect and expect it of yourself, is great, keep doing it. I’ve got no problems with that. Also, I do not say that it is good or bad to give your best. Expect a lot, increase the standards. I just want to offer my opinion on why I think its mistake that you afraid of new things because you will be unperfect in them.

Therefore, the advice from my experience is – do not try to be perfect, do not try to be perfectionist.

Standard of perfection is pointless, and it will slow down you progress and development.

Do something. Do not try to be perfect. You are the man. Not God.

Do something because you want do not avoid something because it might not be good at it. Do not expect perfection from yourself or from others.

This will speed up your personal growth, and you will build the life you deserve to have.

Autumn (or haw to accept the personal regression)

November 1st, 2009

I just saw a tree in a yard.

The leaves were yellow, very yellow. So the fall came.

It reminded me of continuous flow of things. Everything is born, lives and dies. As leaves on trees. Is born, lives, dies and again arises. Night and day turns, the seasons, leaves, people … And so again and again.

I even heard or read somewhere that the universe expands and expands and how it will get to one point when begin shrinking … I do not know how this is actually true, but it is interesting that so all around us works.

Did you know that your personal progress will not be eternal? You can not forever grow. It just does not go.

Be ready for it.

Also, if you are in a bad situation, it will not be forever and it will stop once.

Remember, you do not have such a power. This is so, and there’s no point annoying because of that. All that is born must die, everything must arise and disappear … It was discovered by the people who lived long before us. We know that even if they have not found it.

So, everything is subject to change. Everything is born, lives and dies. You may live a very nice, but remember … sooner or later will do one of these two things, or you even more progress, or you regress.

Do not be afraid of setbacks. It’s just another experience. You do not have to like it, but don’t beat yourself up because of that. It would be like to be annoying for a season. Is it worth it? Of course not. You can live in peace and when the autumn and winter and summer and spring. And when the day and when night.
